Clips and editing
Edit a clip
Trim a clip by its words, cut parts out, remove silences and filler words, change the title and undo any edit.
Updated
You edit a clip by its words. Pick words in the transcript to cut them, trim to them or start and end the clip on them. This article covers trimming, cuts, silence removal, titles and undo.
The editor at a glance
The clip editor has three parts:
- Left: the clip list, best first.
- Middle: the preview, with a timeline strip under it.
- Right: the tabs Edit, Style, Packaging, Chat and Export & post.
Every change shows in the preview straight away and saves by itself. The top of the preview says Saving… and then Saved.
Select words
Open the Edit tab. It shows the clip's transcript, plus some of the words around it.
- Click a word to play from it.
- Drag across words, or shift-click, to select several.
- With the keyboard, use ← and → to move a word at a time, and Shift ← or Shift → to select.
When words are selected, a toolbar appears above the transcript.
Trim and cut
| Button | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | Delete | Removes the selected words from the clip |
| Bring back | R | Restores cut words |
| Trim to | T | Makes the clip just the selected words |
| Start here | [ | Starts the clip at the selection |
| End here | ] | Ends the clip at the selection |
| Emphasis | E | Highlights the selected words in the captions |
| Fix text | Enter | Corrects the words' spelling |
Start here and End here also work with nothing selected. They use the word at the playhead.
You can also drag the start and end handles on the timeline strip. Each handle moves a whole word at a time. With a handle focused, ← and → move it by one word.
Words outside the clip are shown too, so you can bring them in. After edits, a clip can be between 1 second and 3 minutes long.
Remove silences and filler words
At the top of the Edit tab, turn on Remove silences and filler words. Long pauses and fillers like "um" and "uh" are cut out. The switch shows how many seconds shorter the clip is. Turn it off to put them all back. On the timeline strip, removed pauses, removed filler words and your own cuts are marked, so you can see what was taken out.
Change the title
Open the Style tab and edit Title. It's the clip's name and the default title when you post it. Press Enter or click away to save. The Hook field just above it is the short line shown on screen at the start of the clip. You can hide the hook with On screen for the first 3 seconds.
Fix a word's spelling
Select the word, press Fix text (or Enter), type the correction and press Enter. The fix goes into the video's transcript, so the captions in every clip follow. See Fix the transcript.
Undo and redo
Undo and Redo sit above the preview. They cover every kind of edit, including style changes and chat edits. Hover over them to see what they'll undo. Keyboard: ⌘Z or Ctrl+Z to undo, ⌘⇧Z or Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo.
Keyboard shortcuts
Press ? in the editor to see every shortcut. Space plays and pauses, and Esc clears the selection.
When editing is locked
- While a clip exports, edits wait. They open again when the export is done.
- A dubbed clip has its words and timing fixed to the new voice. Edit the original clip, then dub it again.
Other ways to edit
- Type what you want in the Chat tab. See Edit a clip with chat.
- Change captions, colors and shape in the Style tab. See Caption styles and brand kits and Reframing and layouts.
