Fix the transcript
Correct misheard words once and every clip's captions follow. How to split, merge and review words, and how re-timing works.
Updated
Captions come from the video's transcript. If a name is misspelled or a word was misheard, fix it once in the transcript and every clip's captions follow. This article shows where to fix words and how the timing is handled.
Where to fix words
There are two places, and both change the same transcript.
The whole transcript. On the project page, below the clip editor, open Whole transcript · fix words once, for every clip. It shows every word of the video.
Inside a clip. In the clip editor's Edit tab, select words in the clip's transcript and press Fix text (or Enter). Type the correction and press Enter. You'll see "Fixed. Every clip's captions follow."
Fix a word
In the whole transcript:
- Click the word.
- Type the correction.
- Press Enter, or click away, to save. Press Esc to cancel.
The fix appears straight away and saves in the background. If it doesn't save, you'll see "That change didn't save. Try again."
Split, merge and rewrite words
- Split a word: type a space in it. "nonprofit" becomes "non profit".
- Rewrite several words: click the first word, then shift-click the last. They open together, so you can rewrite a phrase or merge words into one. You can edit up to 20 words at once.
- Add a missing word: open the words around the gap and type it in.
Review unsure words
The speech model marks words it wasn't sure about with a wavy underline. Hover over one to see how sure it was. The top of the transcript shows how many words there are to check, or "all checked".
Press Review unsure words to step through them one at a time. For each word you see the words around it, and you can:
- Save fix to save your correction
- Looks right to confirm it
- Done to stop reviewing
Names, brands and technical terms are the words most worth checking.
How re-timing works
Captions are timed to each word, so changed words need new timing. Reeltopus handles it for you:
- Words you didn't change keep their original timing.
- New words share out the time the old ones left behind, in proportion to how long they take to say.
- A word that was missing can take time from a pause next to it.
This happens straight away. When a stretch changes a lot, Reeltopus also checks it against the audio in the background and refines the timing. Where that check isn't sure, the first estimate stays.
What changes and what doesn't
Fixes change the captions in every clip of the video, including clips you've already edited. Clip titles and hooks are separate, so change those in the Style tab.
If you already exported a clip, export it again to get the corrected captions in the MP4.
Dubbed clips have their own translated captions, so transcript fixes don't change them. Fix the original, then dub it again if needed.
Who can fix the transcript
Owners, admins and editors can fix words. Viewers and clients can't. Fixing words doesn't use any hours.
