Zoom recordings into clips people will watch

Customer calls, office hours, AMAs, recorded podcast guests and internal all-hands often happen over Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. The useful five minutes are buried in an hour of logistics, and the video is a grid of small webcam boxes. Here is how to record so the footage is clippable, and how Reeltopus turns it into vertical clips.

What makes Zoom recordings hard to clip

  • Gallery view means tiny faces

In gallery view each person is a small tile. Crop one tile to 9:16 and you are blowing up a few hundred pixels, so it looks soft. Record speaker view instead. In Zoom cloud recording, pick "Record active speaker with shared screen" or record active speaker, gallery and shared screen separately and upload the active speaker file. Zoom local recordings capture whatever view you have on screen, so switch to Speaker view before you press record.

  • Screen shares don't fit a phone

A 16:9 slide or product demo is unreadable once cropped to 9:16. Clips work best from stretches where someone is talking on camera. Zoom's option to record the active speaker and the shared screen as separate files gives you a clean speaker video to clip from, even during a presentation.

  • An hour of logistics around five good minutes

Most of a meeting is agenda, scheduling and "can you see my screen". Reeltopus reads the whole transcript, ranks the moments that stand on their own and writes a one-line reason for each, so you skim reasons instead of rewatching the call. Filler words and silences are removed per clip.

  • People spoke for a small room

Colleagues and customers said things expecting a few listeners. A recording notice is not permission to post publicly: Google Meet, for example, notifies participants when recording starts and stops, but that is not the same as agreeing to be on LinkedIn. Get a clear yes from everyone who appears before a clip leaves your company.

Moments worth clipping

  • A customer explaining the problem in their words

On a recorded customer call, the customer describing their problem or result is stronger than any marketing line. Public use needs their written OK.

  • A clear explanation of a hard idea

When a teammate explains something well on a call, a 60-second clip makes a good onboarding or training piece for the people who missed it.

  • An answer from office hours or an AMA

Recorded Q&A sessions are already split into questions and answers. Each good answer can be its own clip.

  • A decision and the reason for it

For internal recaps, the moment a team lands on a decision and says why is often all anyone outside the meeting needs to see.

  • A remote guest conversation

Many podcasts and interviews are recorded over video calls. With two people on camera, split-screen keeps both faces in the vertical frame.

How it works

  1. 1

Record speaker view and get the file

Zoom: use active speaker for cloud recording, or Speaker view for local recording. Google Meet: the recording goes to the meeting organiser's Google Drive and includes the active speaker and anything presented. Teams: meeting recordings save to the organiser's OneDrive, and only the organiser can download them.

  2. 2

    Upload and review the picks

Upload the MP4. Clips come back ranked with a reason for each. Fix flagged words like product names, acronyms and people's names once, and every clip updates.

  3. 3

    Reframe and tidy

Speaker tracking keeps the person talking centred, and split-screen handles two-person conversations. Remove filler words and pauses, which meetings have plenty of, and trim by deleting words from the transcript.

  4. 4

    Decide where each clip goes

For internal clips, download the MP4 and share it where your team works. For public clips, get permission from everyone in the frame, then post. Direct posting to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads and Facebook is rolling out platform by platform.

Recommended setup

Recommended clip settings for Zoom recordings
SettingUseWhy
Recording viewSpeaker view / active speaker file, not galleryGallery tiles are too small to crop to 9:16 without going soft.
Clip length30–90 seconds, one idea per clipSpoken explanations from calls need a little room for context, but one point per clip keeps it watchable.
CaptionsClean two-line style with filler words removedWebcam and laptop audio is uneven. Captions carry the meaning when the sound doesn't.
PlatformsLinkedIn and YouTube Shorts for public clips; MP4 download for internal useMost meeting content is work content, which suits LinkedIn. Internal clips never need to leave your drive.
Export1080p MP4, plus SRT if you need a caption fileExports are capped at the source resolution, so a webcam recording won't get sharper at a higher setting.

Questions

Should I record Zoom in speaker view or gallery view for clips?+

Speaker view. Gallery view splits the frame into small tiles, and cropping one tile to vertical leaves very few pixels. Zoom cloud recording can also save active speaker, gallery view and shared screen as separate files; upload the active speaker one.

Does Reeltopus connect to my Zoom account?+

Not today. Download the recording from Zoom, Google Meet or Teams and upload the file to Reeltopus.

Can I clip a meeting where someone is sharing slides?+

Yes, but pick moments where the speaker is on camera. Slides are hard to read at 9:16. If you present often, record the active speaker and shared screen as separate files so you always have a clean speaker video.

Do I need permission to post clips from a meeting?+

For anything public, yes, from everyone who appears or is heard. A recording notification is not consent to publish. For internal clips, follow your company's policy on recordings.

My Zoom audio is rough. Will the transcript be usable?+

Transcription handles ordinary webcam audio, and words it is unsure of are flagged so you can fix them. Reeltopus doesn't repair bad audio, so echo or crosstalk will still be heard in the clip.
