YouTube title checker

Type up to three title ideas and the topic people search for. Each title gets a phone-width preview, a character count against YouTube's 100-character limit and a short checklist: is the topic early, does it start with the point rather than an episode number, is it easy to read.

These checks are about clarity, not a prediction of views: no tool can tell you which title will win. To test titles on real viewers, use Test & compare in YouTube Studio, which works on long-form videos (not Shorts). The preview shows a typical phone layout; where a title is cut depends on the device.

How to use it

  1. 1Type two or three title options for the same video.
  2. 2Add the topic people would search for, if there is one.
  3. 3Read each checklist and fix anything marked: move the topic forward and cut filler from the start.
  4. 4Pick the clearest title. For long-form videos, test the finalists on real viewers with Test & compare in YouTube Studio.

Questions

How long can a YouTube title be?+

Up to 100 characters, for regular videos and Shorts. Long titles can be cut off in feeds and search results, and where depends on the device, so put the words that matter in the first few.

Can this tool tell me which title will get more views?+

No, and no tool honestly can. It checks clarity and the things that get cut off or ignored. The only way to know is to test on real viewers: YouTube Studio's Test & compare can try up to three titles on a long-form video and keeps the one with the most watch time. It isn't available for Shorts.

Should I put hashtags in my title?+

Usually not. They use up the most visible characters. If your title has no hashtags, YouTube shows the first three from the description above the title instead.

Where should the episode number or show name go?+

At the end, if you include them at all. YouTube's own title tips say to put the most important words near the beginning and save episode numbers and branding for the end, since viewers may only see part of the title.

Is anything uploaded?+

No. The checks run in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
