Questions

What's the difference between SRT and VTT?+

Both list each caption with a start time, an end time and its text. SRT numbers every caption and writes milliseconds after a comma (00:00:01,000). WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT line, uses a full stop (00:00:01.000) and supports extras like positioning and speaker tags. Video editors and YouTube accept SRT; HTML5 video players use VTT.

What happens to styling when I convert?+

Italic, bold and underline tags are kept, since both formats support them. Tags only one format understands are removed: WebVTT voice and class tags when converting to SRT, and SRT font tags and {\an8}-style positioning when converting to VTT.

How do I fix subtitles that are out of sync?+

Find one line you can hear clearly and compare when it's spoken with when its caption appears. If the caption shows 1.5 seconds late, shift by −1.5. Captions that would end before the video starts are removed.

Is my file uploaded?+

No. Reading, converting and shifting all happen in your browser.
