  • YouTube · Video or Short title188 / 100

88 over the limit. Viewers may only see the start of a long title, so put the important words first. Source

  • YouTube · Description194 / 5,000

The Help Center says 5,000 characters; the API counts 5,000 bytes. Accented letters, emoji and non-Latin scripts use 2 to 4 bytes each, so we count bytes to be safe. Source

  • YouTube · Tags, all together188 / 500

Commas between tags count, and a tag with a space counts with quotes around it. Type tags separated by commas. Source

  • Instagram · Post or Reel caption188 / 2,200

Instagram's Help Center allows up to 5 hashtags on a post. Source

  • TikTok · Video caption (posted by apps)190 / 2,200

This is the limit for captions posted through TikTok's API, which scheduling tools use. TikTok's help pages weren't reachable to confirm the in-app limit. Source (archived copy)

  • X · Post189 / 280

X counts most emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2, and every link as 23. Premium accounts can post up to 25,000 characters. Source

  • X · Bio188 / 160

28 over the limit. Source (archived copy)

  • LinkedIn · Post188 / 3,000

  • Threads · Post188 / 500

Up to 5 links per post. Threads' API counts an emoji by its UTF-8 bytes, so emoji-heavy posts can hit the limit sooner there. Source

Limits read on each platform's own help or developer pages on 2026-10-21. Platforms change them, so check the app if you're right at the edge.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste your caption, title, description or post.
  2. 2Check the bars: anything over a limit turns coral.
  3. 3Filter to one platform to see its fields, and read the note under each limit.
  4. 4Trim, then copy your text back into the app.

Questions

What is the Instagram caption character limit?+

2,200 characters for a post or Reel caption, according to Instagram's developer documentation. Instagram's Help Center also allows up to 5 hashtags on a post.

How long can a YouTube title and description be?+

A title can be up to 100 characters and a description up to 5,000. YouTube's API counts the description in bytes rather than characters, so text with emoji or non-Latin scripts runs out sooner. The checker counts bytes for the description to be safe.

What is the TikTok caption limit?+

Captions posted through TikTok's Content Posting API, which scheduling tools use, can be up to 2,200 characters. We couldn't confirm the in-app limit on TikTok's own pages, so we don't list it.

Why does X count my post differently?+

X weights characters: most emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23, whatever its length. The checker follows X's published counting rules.

Why isn't my platform or field listed?+

We only list limits we could read on the platform's own pages. Facebook posts, Instagram and TikTok bios, TikTok's in-app caption and LinkedIn headlines are left out until we can confirm them.
